Following the arrest and extradition of the Menéndez Cartel leader, “El Niño”, his organization splintered into many warring factions. The coalition that led to his arrest has disbanded, leaving the Mexican government on their own to handle the aftermath. The power vacuum has left all sides fighting over control of smuggling routes, laboratories, arms and land. American politicians and the Mexican public are calling for the government to intervene in the face of ever growing violence. So Mexican officials have decided to target the strongest of the factions first in efforts to resolve the crisis.
